Focus Features está trabajando en una adaptación del libro de EL James, "50 Shades of Grey" con Kelly Marcel ("Terra Nova") como guionista. Pero al incluir la novela tantas escenas de sexo gráfico, muchos opinan que el estudio no podrá hacer una adaptación fiel, a no ser que haga una película porno.

En una entrevista reciente con Marcel, el escritor ha revelado que el guión no va a rebajar el tono del libro. "Habrá mucho sexo. Vamos a ir al 100%," ha afirmado. "Será para mayores de 17. Va a ser lasciva."

Focus Features pagó 5 millones de dólares por los derechos del libro, por lo que preferiría evitar esa clasificación. Muchos cines se niegan a proyectar películas para mayores de 17, convirtiéndolas en un gran riesgo para cualquier estudio. Pero Focus ya lo ha hecho antes.

En el 2007, el estudio lanzó "Lust, Caution" de Ang Lee, con una clasificación NC-17. No consiguió una gran divulgación y acabó recaudando solamente 4 millones con un presupuesto de 15. En el extranjero, sin embargo, consiguió otros 63 millones, con lo que terminó siendo rentable. Fox Searchlight hizo lo mismo con la película de Michael Fassbender, "Shame," y también tuvo que confiar en audiencias internacionales para hacer dinero.

Pero si existe una película que se merezca la clasificación para adultos, es "50 Shades of Grey." Además, la decisión de convertirla en restringida para menores de 17, podría acabar perjudicándola.
